Terms of Service

1. Agreement to Terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of StyleRef, a web-based platform for creating, managing, and refining style reference materials, available at styleref.io ("StyleRef," "we," "us," or "our").
StyleRef is currently operated by its creator as a private individual based in Sweden. It is an independent project and is not operated by a registered company. If operation of the service is later transferred to a company (for example, a Swedish limited company, "StyleRef AB"), these Terms and your account will transfer to that entity; we will notify you and update these Terms accordingly.
By accessing or using StyleRef, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
We may modify these Terms at any time. We will provide notice of material changes by email to your registered account address and through notice within the StyleRef platform at least thirty days before such changes take effect. Your continued use of StyleRef after the effective date of modified Terms constitutes acceptance of those changes. If you do not agree to modified Terms, you must discontinue use of the service before the effective date.
2. Description of Service
StyleRef provides tools for creating and managing style reference materials through interactive Style Boards. The platform enables you to define visual, tonal, and structural style parameters, extract style elements from source materials using artificial intelligence, manually edit and refine style definitions, and generate structured StyleRefs in formats including Markdown, XML, and JSON for use in external tools and workflows.
StyleRef is a reference creation tool, not a content generation platform. We do not generate final creative outputs such as images, written documents, or designs. The StyleRefs and Style Cards produced through our service are reference materials intended to guide your creative work in third-party tools and AI platforms. We do not control, influence, or take responsibility for content generated by external AI systems when you use StyleRefs created through StyleRef.
The service operates on a tiered subscription model with different plans offering varying levels of functionality, storage capacity, and AI extraction usage limits. Current plan details and limitations are available on our website and within the platform. We may adjust plan features and limits with reasonable advance notice to active subscribers.
MCP Server, API, and Agent-Initiated Actions
StyleRef offers a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and programmatic API that allow you to connect AI agents and third-party applications to StyleRef. Some interfaces are available without an account for reading public gallery content; others require you to connect your StyleRef account through our OAuth authorization flow and grant scoped permissions (for example, reading your library, creating or editing styles, or running AI extractions). When you authorize a third-party application, you are responsible for the actions it takes on your behalf, including any styles it creates, edits, saves, or publishes and any extraction credits it consumes; such actions count against your plan's limits and usage exactly as if you performed them directly. You should only connect applications you trust, grant the minimum permissions needed, and you may revoke a connection at any time. Automated access must comply with this Agreement, including the Acceptable Use section, and with any rate limits or technical restrictions we apply. We may suspend or revoke API and MCP access, or an individual connected application's access, to protect the integrity, security, or availability of the service.
3. Account Registration and Access
To access StyleRef features, you may create an account using email-based authentication through magic links. We do not store passwords. You are responsible for maintaining the security and confidentiality of your account access and for all activities that occur under your account.
You agree to notify us promptly of any unauthorized access to your account or any other security breach. You will not share your account credentials or allow others to access your account.
We offer anonymous session functionality that permits limited use of the platform without creating a permanent account. Data created during anonymous sessions may be migrated to a permanent account upon registration, subject to technical limitations and plan restrictions. Anonymous session data may be automatically deleted after a period of inactivity.
You must be at least eighteen years of age to create an account and use StyleRef. You agree to provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration. Providing false information or impersonating another person or entity constitutes grounds for account termination.
4. Intellectual Property Ownership and Rights
Your Content Ownership
You retain all ownership rights, title, and interest in and to all content you submit, upload, or create using StyleRef, including but not limited to text descriptions, images, source materials, URLs, style parameters, and Style Board configurations (collectively, "User Content"). These Terms do not transfer any ownership of your User Content to StyleRef.
License Grant to StyleRef
By submitting User Content to StyleRef, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, store, modify, display, and transmit your User Content solely to the extent necessary to provide the StyleRef service to you. This license includes the right to make technical reproductions for backup and system reliability purposes, perform format conversions and technical processing required for service functionality, generate derivative representations such as Style Cards and visual previews, transmit your User Content to third-party AI service providers when you use extraction features as described in Section 5, and make temporary cached copies to improve service performance.
This license does not permit StyleRef to use your User Content for training artificial intelligence models operated or controlled by StyleRef, incorporate your User Content into products or services offered to other customers, share your User Content with third parties except as explicitly described in these Terms and our Privacy Policy, or use your User Content for marketing or promotional purposes without your separate consent.
This license terminates when you delete your User Content or close your account. Following termination, we will cease active use of your User Content and will remove it from production systems within thirty days. User Content may persist in backup systems for up to ninety days following deletion, after which it is permanently destroyed. User Content subject to legal holds or regulatory preservation requirements will be retained only as long as legally required.
The license described in this section is limited to operating the service for you and does not authorize public display of your User Content. If, and only if, you affirmatively choose to publish a style to the public gallery, you grant the separate and broader public license described in the "Publishing to the Public Gallery" subsection below. Styles you do not publish remain private and are not displayed to other users.
Outputs Created Using StyleRef
You retain complete ownership of all content, materials, and works you create using StyleRefs generated by StyleRef, including content created in third-party AI platforms and tools (collectively, "Downstream Outputs"). StyleRef makes no claim of ownership, license, or any other right in Downstream Outputs. The structure, format, and methodology of StyleRefs generated by StyleRef are licensed to you for your unlimited commercial and non-commercial use without restriction or obligation to StyleRef.
For clarity, if you use a StyleRef created in StyleRef to generate images, text, designs, or other content in ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, or any other third-party platform, you own those outputs subject only to the terms of service of the third-party platform used to create them.
StyleRef Platform Ownership
StyleRef and all associated intellectual property, including software code, algorithms, user interface design, trademarks, logos, and documentation, remain the exclusive property of StyleRef's operator and licensors. These Terms grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to access and use the StyleRef platform in accordance with these Terms. This right terminates upon termination of your account or violation of these Terms.
You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or create derivative works based on StyleRef except to the extent such restrictions are prohibited by applicable law.
Third-Party Materials and Rights Verification
You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights, licenses, and permissions to submit User Content to StyleRef and to grant the licenses described in these Terms. You represent and warrant that your User Content does not infringe or violate any intellectual property rights, privacy rights, publicity rights, or other rights of any third party.
When using AI extraction features with images, documents, or other materials created by third parties, you are responsible for ensuring you have appropriate rights to analyze such materials. StyleRef does not verify rights ownership and assumes no responsibility for rights violations arising from User Content you submit.
Publishing to the Public Gallery
StyleRef offers an optional public gallery that lets you publish a style so that others can discover, view, copy, and remix it. Publishing is entirely voluntary and is never the default. Each style remains private unless you choose to publish it, and you select a visibility level when you do: "public" (listed in the gallery and indexable by search engines), "unlisted" (reachable only by direct link and not listed), or "private" (removed from the gallery). The content you publish may include the style specification and its parameters, an optional title and description, any sample output images and inspiration or cover images you attach, and AI-generated metadata such as category, tags, and a short descriptive summary (collectively, "Published Content").
Public license you grant. By publishing a style, and for as long as it remains published, you grant StyleRef a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable license to host, store, reproduce, adapt, create previews and thumbnails of, publicly display, publicly perform, distribute, and otherwise make the Published Content available to the public in connection with the gallery and StyleRef's promotion of the gallery, including displaying it on public pages, generating social-share and Open Graph images, and permitting search engines and other automated systems to index and cache it. You also grant every other user of StyleRef a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to view, copy, remix, and adapt your Published Content within StyleRef and to use the resulting styles, including for commercial purposes. Reciprocally, when you copy or remix another user's published style, you receive that same license from its author and are bound by it. This subsection is an express exception to, and prevails over, the limitations in the "License Grant to StyleRef" subsection above with respect to Published Content only.
Your representations for Published Content. You represent and warrant that you own or have obtained all rights, licenses, consents, and permissions necessary to publish the Published Content and to grant the licenses described above; that the Published Content, including every sample output and uploaded image, does not infringe or misappropriate any intellectual property, privacy, publicity, moral, or other right of any person or entity; that you have the rights to any AI-generated outputs you upload under the terms of the tools used to create them; that the Published Content does not contain the personal information of any other individual without that individual's consent; and that the Published Content is not unlawful, defamatory, hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, deceptive, or otherwise in violation of the Acceptable Use provisions in Section 6. You are solely responsible for the Published Content you make available and for ensuring you have the right to do so.
Public exposure you acknowledge. You understand that Published Content is, by design, made available to the public, and that publishing also displays elements of your public profile, such as your chosen handle, display name, and avatar, alongside your styles. Once content is public, it may be viewed, copied, remixed, downloaded, screenshotted, re-shared, indexed, and cached by other users, search engines, AI systems, and third parties outside our control. Because of this, copies, remixes, cached versions, and indexed references may continue to exist and circulate even after you unlist, set to private, delete, or otherwise remove the content from StyleRef. We cannot retrieve, recall, or compel deletion of copies that others have made or that third parties have cached or indexed. You should not publish anything you are not comfortable making permanently and publicly available, and you should not include private, sensitive, confidential, or personally identifying information in Published Content.
Moderation and our discretion. Published Content may be reviewed using a combination of automated systems, including AI-based text and image classification, and human review. We may, in our sole discretion and with or without notice, decline to publish, delay, unlist, set to private, remove, or refuse to restore any Published Content, and we may suspend or permanently bar a style or account from the gallery, for any reason or no reason, including suspected violation of these Terms. Automated moderation is provided on a best-efforts basis only; it is not exhaustive, may produce false positives or false negatives, and its operation is not a representation, warranty, or guarantee by StyleRef that any Published Content is lawful, non-infringing, accurate, or appropriate. We are not obligated to monitor Published Content, and any review we perform does not transfer responsibility for the content to us or relieve you of your obligations.
Removal. You may unpublish a style at any time by setting its visibility to private, which removes it from the gallery and from new public access through StyleRef, subject to the persistence of third-party copies and caches described above. Reporting of infringing or unlawful Published Content, and our takedown process, are described in Section 13. Your Published Content is your User Content for purposes of the indemnification obligations in Section 11, and you agree to indemnify StyleRef and other users against claims arising from your Published Content or from your copying or remixing of others' Published Content.
5. AI Extraction and Third-Party Service Providers
Use of Third-Party AI Providers
StyleRef uses third-party artificial intelligence service providers to analyze source materials and extract style parameters when you use AI extraction features. When you initiate AI extraction, your submitted User Content is transmitted to one or more of these providers for processing.
Each third-party AI provider operates under its own terms of service and privacy policy, which govern how that provider processes your User Content during extraction. You acknowledge that your use of AI extraction features subjects your User Content to processing by third-party providers in accordance with their respective policies. We select established providers and, where the provider offers such controls, configure our use so that submitted content is not used to train the provider's models. We may add, remove, or change AI providers to maintain or improve the service and will reflect material changes in our documentation.
User-Provided API Keys
StyleRef may offer functionality that allows you to provide your own API keys for third-party AI services. When you use this functionality, your use of the third-party service is governed solely by that provider's terms of service. You are responsible for all costs, usage limits, billing arrangements, and compliance obligations associated with your use of third-party services through user-provided API keys.
StyleRef does not control, guarantee, or take responsibility for the availability, performance, security, or data handling practices of third-party services accessed through user-provided API keys. We do not access your API keys except as necessary to facilitate your requested operations, and we store credentials in encrypted form.
No Warranties on AI Extraction
AI extraction is an interpretive process that analyzes source materials to identify style patterns, elements, and characteristics. Results are inherently subjective and may vary based on source material quality, AI model behavior, processing parameters, and other factors beyond our control.
We make no warranties or representations regarding the accuracy, completeness, appropriateness, or fitness for purpose of AI extraction results. You are solely responsible for reviewing, validating, editing, and determining the suitability of extracted style information for your intended use.
6. Acceptable Use and Prohibited Activities
You agree to use StyleRef only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. The following activities are expressly prohibited.
You may not violate any applicable laws, regulations, or third-party rights, including intellectual property rights, privacy rights, publicity rights, contractual rights, or other proprietary rights. You may not submit, upload, or process User Content that is illegal, fraudulent, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, obscene, invasive of privacy, hateful, or otherwise objectionable. You may not use StyleRef to create style references for content that infringes intellectual property rights, promotes illegal activities, facilitates fraud or deception, violates the terms of service of third-party AI platforms, or enables creation of harmful, misleading, or unlawful content.
You may not attempt to gain unauthorized access to StyleRef systems, networks, or data, interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of StyleRef, use automated systems, bots, or scrapers to access StyleRef in ways that exceed reasonable human usage patterns, or probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of our systems.
You may not misrepresent your identity, affiliation, or relationship with any person or entity, or impersonate any person or entity. You may not use StyleRef to collect, store, or process personal information about other individuals without their consent or in violation of applicable privacy laws.
You may not submit User Content containing malware, viruses, or other malicious code, or use StyleRef in any manner that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair our systems.
Enforcement
We reserve the right to investigate suspected violations of these Terms and to take appropriate action, which may include removing or disabling access to User Content, suspending or terminating accounts with or without notice, reporting violations to law enforcement where we believe illegal activity has occurred, and pursuing legal remedies. We are not obligated to monitor User Content or user activity, but we reserve the right to do so to enforce these Terms, comply with legal obligations, or protect the rights and safety of StyleRef and our users.
7. Subscription Plans, Payments, and Refunds
StyleRef offers multiple subscription tiers with different features, storage limits, and AI extraction allowances. Current plan details and pricing are available on our website and within the platform.
Billing and Payment
If you subscribe to a paid plan, you authorize us to charge your designated payment method for applicable subscription fees on a recurring basis at the billing interval you selected. Payments are processed by our third-party payment processor (Stripe); we do not store your card details. You are responsible for providing accurate payment information. If automatic payment fails, we will attempt to notify you and provide a grace period of up to fourteen days to update your payment information before suspending access to paid features.
Pricing Changes
We may modify subscription pricing. Pricing changes for existing subscribers will be announced at least thirty days before the effective date by email and notice within the platform, and take effect at the next renewal following the notice period. Your continued subscription after a price change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the new pricing.
Refunds and Right of Withdrawal
If you are a consumer in the European Union or European Economic Area, you have a statutory right to withdraw from your subscription purchase within fourteen days without giving a reason. We honor this by providing a full refund if you cancel within fourteen days of your initial subscription purchase. This applies to your first purchase and not to renewals or plan changes, except where mandatory law provides otherwise. By starting to use paid features immediately, you consent to the service beginning during the withdrawal period.
Apart from the above, subscription fees are generally non-refundable. We do not provide refunds or credits for partial subscription periods, unused AI extraction credits, or downgrades. We may provide discretionary refunds in cases of extended service outages, significant failure to deliver advertised features, or billing errors. Refund requests should be submitted through our support channels.
Non-Payment
If payment is not received when due, we may suspend access to paid features while maintaining read-only access to your User Content for up to thirty days, after which we may downgrade your account to the free tier, subject to that tier's limitations. User Content exceeding free tier limits may be deleted after you have been given reasonable opportunity to export it.
8. Service Availability and Changes
StyleRef is an independently operated service provided on a best-effort basis. We aim to keep the service reliable and available, but we do not guarantee any particular level of uptime or availability, and we do not offer service credits. We may temporarily suspend access for maintenance, security updates, or urgent repairs, and will give advance notice where reasonably possible.
We may modify, enhance, or discontinue features of StyleRef at our discretion. We will make reasonable efforts to give advance notice before discontinuing material features that significantly impact core functionality.
You may export your User Content at any time through the data export functionality provided within StyleRef. If we decide to discontinue StyleRef entirely, we will provide at least thirty days advance notice and will maintain data export functionality throughout the notice period so you can retrieve your User Content.
9. Warranties and Disclaimers
StyleRef is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express, implied, or statutory, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that StyleRef will meet your specific requirements, that AI extraction will be accurate or suitable for any particular purpose, that the service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free, or that defects will be corrected. We do not warrant the availability, performance, security, or data handling practices of third-party AI service providers or other third-party services.
Consumer rights. If you are a consumer in the European Union, European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protection laws, nothing in these Terms limits or excludes your statutory rights that cannot be waived by contract, including statutory conformity rights for digital services.
10. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, StyleRef and its operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive, or exemplary damages arising out of or relating to your use of StyleRef or these Terms, including lost profits, loss of business opportunity, loss of data, cost of substitute services, business interruption, or reputational harm, regardless of the legal theory and even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our total aggregate liability for all claims arising out of or relating to StyleRef or these Terms shall not exceed the total amount you have paid to StyleRef in subscription fees during the twelve months immediately preceding the event giving rise to liability.
These limitations do not apply to liability arising from our gross negligence or willful misconduct, death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including mandatory consumer protection law.
You acknowledge that StyleRef is offered at low cost by an individual operator and that the fees reflect the allocation of risk set out in these Terms. These limitations are an essential basis of the bargain between you and StyleRef.
11. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless StyleRef and its operator from and against any third-party claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, expenses, or fees (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or relating to your User Content or Published Content, your use or misuse of StyleRef in violation of these Terms, your violation of any law or third-party right (including intellectual property, privacy, or contractual rights), any negligent or wrongful conduct by you or anyone using your account, or any Downstream Outputs you create using StyleRefs generated through StyleRef.
We will make reasonable efforts to notify you of any such claim. We reserve the right to assume the exclusive defense and control of any matter subject to indemnification by you, in which case you agree to cooperate with our defense. You may not settle any claim subject to your indemnification obligation without our prior written consent. Your indemnification obligations survive termination of these Terms.
12. Termination
Termination by You
You may terminate your account at any time through the account closure process in platform settings or by contacting support. For paid subscriptions, termination does not entitle you to a refund of fees already paid except as provided in Section 7; your subscription remains active through the end of the current billing period unless you request immediate termination.
Termination by StyleRef
We may suspend or terminate your account, with or without advance notice, if we reasonably believe you have materially violated these Terms, engaged in fraudulent, abusive, or illegal activity, failed to pay subscription fees when due, used StyleRef in a manner that creates security or legal risks, or violated the intellectual property or other rights of third parties (including as a repeat infringer under Section 13).
Effect of Termination
Upon termination, your right to access and use StyleRef ceases. We will delete or anonymize your User Content from production systems within thirty days following termination, except for content subject to legal holds or backup retention as described in Section 4.
Provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination remain in effect, including provisions relating to intellectual property ownership, granted licenses, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnification, and dispute resolution.
13. Reporting Infringement, Takedown, and Repeat Infringers
We respect intellectual property rights and expect users to do the same.
Reporting. If you believe content on StyleRef — including Published Content in the public gallery — infringes your copyright or other rights, or otherwise violates these Terms, report it to ... or through any in-product reporting mechanism we provide. For claims of copyright infringement, please include: identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed; identification and location (URL) of the allegedly infringing content; your contact information; a statement of your good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the rights holder, its agent, or the law; a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the rights holder or authorized to act on the rights holder's behalf; and your physical or electronic signature.
Takedown. Upon receiving a sufficiently substantiated notice, we will act expeditiously to remove or disable access to the identified content and, where appropriate, notify the user who posted it and give them an opportunity to respond. We may restore content if we receive a legitimate counter-explanation demonstrating rights or authorization. Knowingly submitting false or abusive reports may result in liability and account termination.
Repeat infringers. We maintain a policy of terminating, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who are repeat infringers of intellectual property rights.
Confidential information. If you become aware that your confidential information has been uploaded to StyleRef without authorization, you may submit a takedown request to the same address, including identification of the information, demonstration of your rights, and contact information. We will investigate and remove content we determine has been uploaded without authorization.
14. Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms and any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or StyleRef shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the substantive laws of Sweden, without regard to its conflict of law principles.
Before initiating formal legal proceedings, you agree to contact us at ... to attempt to resolve any dispute informally and in good faith for a period of thirty days.
Disputes that cannot be resolved informally shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the Swedish courts. If you are a consumer residing in the European Union, European Economic Area, or United Kingdom, you retain any mandatory statutory rights under the laws of your country of residence, and you may also bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence. Consumers in Sweden may also refer disputes to the Swedish National Board for Consumer Disputes (Allmänna reklamationsnämnden, ARN).
15. Data Protection and Privacy
Your use of StyleRef is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information and User Content in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Swedish data protection law. The Privacy Policy is incorporated into these Terms by reference.
16. General Provisions
Force Majeure
Neither party shall be liable for any failure or delay in performance due to causes beyond that party's reasonable control, including acts of God, natural disasters, war, terrorism, embargoes, acts of civil or military authorities, fire, floods, pandemics, strikes, failures of telecommunications or internet infrastructure, or failures of third-party service providers.
Assignment
You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your rights and obligations under them without our prior written consent. We may assign these Terms to a successor entity — including a company formed to operate StyleRef — or to a party acquiring substantially all of the assets or business of StyleRef. We will provide notice of any assignment that materially affects your rights.
Notices
Notices to you will be provided by email to the address associated with your account or through notice within the StyleRef platform. You are responsible for maintaining a current email address. Notices to StyleRef should be sent to ....
Entire Agreement and Severability
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and StyleRef regarding the service and supersede all prior agreements. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force and effect, and the invalid provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid, or severed if modification is not possible.
Waiver
No waiver of any term of these Terms constitutes a waiver of any other term. Our failure to enforce any right or provision is not a waiver of that right or provision.
